The LPGA ShopRite Classic – which could be called the un-U.S. Open – begins Friday at Galloway, N.J.

It’s one of three 54-hole events on the tour. The course, the Bay Course at Stockton Seaview Golf Club, is a Hugh Wilson/Donald Ross design. It’s just about 6,200 yards (par 71), and it is, as they say, receptive to scoring.

Stacy Lewis won it last year and in 2013 in a combined 28 under par. Remember, that’s 28 under for six rounds. Mid-level pro Jennifer Johnson shot 63 there in ’13, and 62 last year.

World No. 1 Lydia Ko is not entered, but the field is solid, including eight of the top 10 and 17 of the top 20 in the world rankings. On the tour money list, nine of the top 10 and 18 of the top 20 are entered.

One of two sponsor’s exemptions has gone to Canadian 20 year-old Brooke Henderson.
