Inbee Park answeres questions during a press conference at the 2015 U.S. Women's Open Tuesday.

Inbee Park won’t fiddle with formula for success

Not that she ever wore her emotions on her sleeve but experience has taught Inbee Park to stay on an even keel.

Never too high, ever too low.

That might be especially tough for a player who has the weight of expectations that the leader on the LPGA money list might have.

But here is Park, with three wins this season, getting ready for the U.S. Open at the Lancaster Country Club like any other player with fewer expectations.

When she became the top women’s player, she felt like she had to show people that she was No. 1 for a reason and there was pressure with that.

Slipping into second and then back into first, Park became more comfortable with the position.

“But now it’s my third time being (No. 1), I don’t feel that much pressure anymore,” she said. “I feel like No. 1 or 2, what’s the difference, I’m just playing good golf and I don’t need to show anybody anything. I just try to play my own golf, not do something for other people. The more you get to experience this spot, the more that I experience it, you’re just another golfer.”

Well, that may be taking it a bit too far.

Park won the 2008 U.S. Open at Interlochen in Minnesota and has eight top 10 finishes this season. She has as much chance to lift the trophy on Sunday evening as anyone in the field.

Her comfort in being one of the top players in the world comes from the way she plays the game. Her unemotional facade is part of her game plan.

“I just try to play my best golf, and I try to stay calm on the golf course because I want to play well,” she said. “I think when I try to play well, I just kind of know that I have to be that way, a little bit more calm, not express too much of my emotions. I think that’s how I learned to play. I didn’t try to do that, but that just came naturally to play well.”

You can’t argue with her formula for success, a formula she’s not about to change.
